“CINEMA REHIYON: ALTER NATIVO (Films From The Other Philippines)” is the first national film festival that will solely focus on the movies being created outside of Metro Manila. Here are films set in the various regions of the country made by local filmmakers, truly reflecting their own cultures and way of life. Cinema Rehiyon is a non-competition film festival that aims to throw the spotlight on the film communities that are growing rapidly across the nation.

Short and full-length films from all over the Philippines will be exhibited, most of them being shown in Metro Manila for the very first time. It will feature the best and the brightest of the emerging filmmakers who are making their movies in their own dialect, set in their own local towns and cities. The cities that will be representing their regions are: Bacolod, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Naga. There will also be a section called ATBP which will feature works from various parts of the country.

We would like to invite everyone to check out our COLLECTOR'S EDITION CDS which are officially released in Puerto Princesa City and will be released in Manila at our Burulyawan (2) concert this November 8, 2009 at 9 Mile Kalayaan, QC.

This is the first Cuyono rock album to be released in the Philippines which we have worked hard for years now with the aim of enjoying and letting others enjoy rock music written in our native tongue, Cuyonon.

The Collector's Edition CDS contain 13 Original Cuyono Rock and Acoustic Music - the first of its kind (titles of which can be found at the sidebar of this account), a data file of our Guegma Music Video, a poster of our band with the Cuyono Lyrics and English Translations (at the back of the poster) and a UNIQUE Packaging handwoven and produced only in Palawan, Philippines.

WE call this the collector's edition series because of how this specific set of CDS were produced and because the edition is limited to 100 pcs only. Almost everything about it is made of and made by Cuyonons and Palawenyos.

bulyaw mariguen is the cuyono version of the game HIDE and SEEK. It was popular in the little island of Cuyo, Palawan, Philippines during the time that electricity in CUYO was only supplied from 6 in the morning to 12 midnight (1990S). Children, then, loved playing Bulyaw Mariguen in the wild (mariguen) guided by the light of the moon.

bulyaw mariguen starts with the it (budi) covering his eyes and chanting bawal ag-upot sa marapit (hiding near the it is prohibited) to give the other players time to find a place to hide. Once the chanting is over, the it tries to look for the other players. Once the it finds one of the players, he/she holds on to him/her and shouts BULYAW MARIGUEN!!!. The player that the it finds becomes the new it.

Eventually, with the advent of technology, Bulyaw Mariguen disappeared in the vocabulary of young Cuyonons. This is the reason why BULYAW MARIGUEN (the band) chose this name. To them, this game is a symbol of Cuyonon culture that must be revived or at least made known to the young Cuyonons.

bulyaw mariguen is a band composed of 4 Cuyono musicians coming from different generations and different professions. Due to their desire to express themselves in music that makes use of their own Cuyono language, of creating music that they can call their own and that young Cuyonons can enjoy and relate to and their vision of having Cuyono music diversify (from folk to different genres)and contribute to its development, the 4 musicians below formed Bulyaw Mariguen.

Bulyaw Mariguen's Ploning Adin Ka Ren Joins the Baragatan sa Palawan 2009 Celebration!

The month of June always exudes a festive atmosphere in the province of Palawan. It is the month of the anniversary of the civil government of Palawan and the month where locals from other municipalities visit Puerto Princesa City for the month-long celebration of the Baragatan sa Palawan.

“Baragatan”, coined from the Cuyunon (a local language) word “bagat” which means to meet, is a meeting, a convergence, an assembly of people and culture. This celebration is focused on showcasing the historical, cultural, agricultural, investment and trade potentials of the province with the participation of the different municipalities, the private sector and non-government agencies and seeks to provide an opportunity for all sectors and cultural groups to showcase their varying cultures, colorful lifestyles, crafts and handicrafts. http://www.baragatansapalawan.com/

Last June 16, 2009, a Cuyono rock band competition was held at Palawan Provincial Capitol as part of the activities for the Baragatan sa Palawan 2009.There were a total of 13 rock bands who joined the competiton which proves that there is a large group of young musicians in palawan who are capable of making rock music in Cuyonon and a large group of young people who speak or understand the language. Bulyaw Mariguen despite being in Manila joined this night of rockin music by screening their Ploning Adin Ka Ren Music Video before the winners of the Cuyono rock band competition were announced. Bulyaw Mariguen's Ploning Adin Ka Ren Music Video is the first music video produced by a Palawena that features a Cuyono rock band, their song and local talents. It is also the first pop music video of a local band shot in Palawan.

A day after the screening at the Baragatan, A LOT of Cuyonons asked for a copy of the music video at the Cuyo booth of the Baragatan (proof of its demand and effect to the Cuyonons). The vocalist of COOLBIRTH, the winner of the rock band competition, also said that the music video was ASTIG!

Bulyaw Mariguen, Matinlo productions and Kamaru productions visit The Underground River

As a form of recreation for Bulyaw Mariguen and a means for Kamaru productions (members of which come from Pampanga) to see a more touristic side of Palawan, Matinlo productions brought Bulyaw Mariguen and Kamaru productions to the St. Paul Subterranean Underground River through the kind assistance of the Office of the City Mayor of Puerto Princesa.

Special thanks to Daluyon Beach and Mountain resort for providing lunch to them.

Initially, some scenes for the PLONING ADIN KA REN Music Video were planned to be shot at the Underground River. But seeing that this is not essential to the music video, Kamaru productions took photos of Febbie Sabbaluca (the lead actress for the PLONING ADIN KA REN MUSIC VIDEO) and Bulyaw Mariguen (for their album cover) at the Underground River instead.

As a means to entice young media practitioners in creating works of art or production works with local cultural content, Matinlo Productions in cooperation with Bulyaw Mariguen, Kamaru Productions and JCI Kiao conducted a lecture/workshop entitled Local Eyes: Creating Works of Art with Local Cultural Content to 31 3rd & 4th year Mass Communication Students of the Palawan State University last May 27, 2009.

The lecture started with an exercise conducted by Jason Laxamana of Kamaru productions assessing how the students use their local environment in creating their own superhero. Jason Laxamana then proceeded to explaining the exercise and then to showing the students some of the works of Kamaru. In his lecture, Jason laxamana emphasized the benefits of creating production works with local cultural content. His Kapampangan short film entitled Balangingi in Kapampangan or Nosebleed in English which won in the ETC First Philippine Digital Awards for best short film is living proof that using local cultural content in film can give filmmakers a competitive advantage in such competitions. The sense of pride such works bring to the local community and the benefits of doing such to the local economy were also mentioned.

Due to a scheduled radio guesting at DYPR Palawan Radyo, Jason Laxamana gave way for Bulyaw Mariguen to perform their carrier single, Ploning Adin Ka Ren. Matinlo productions chose to ask Bulyaw Mariguen to perform in this lecture to show the students the possibility of using the local language in Palawan, Cuyonon, in making songs that are appealling to the young generation of Palawenos and viable for mainstream broadcasting. Joey Fabello of Matinlo productions, also known as DJ Jojo of IFM 99.9 by some of the students, briefly explained the Bulyaw Mariguen project after the performance of the band to reiterate the value of using local content in works of art and production works. Certificates were awarded and snacks were provided by Jci Kiao after the lecture.

Last May 27, 2009, Bulyaw Mariguen was again featured at DYPR Palawan radyo but this time by a different radio personality. They were featured by the Program Director of DYPR Palawan Radyo Tangay Rouel Caralipio at his RONDA PALAWAN PROGRAM. Below is a full English translation of the interview. Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): As we have mentioned earlier my friends, this afternoon we are going to have special guests...a band whom we weren't able to interview last week due to lack of time..they are here right now, let us welcome, bulyaw mariguen- a cuyonon rock band...

Ok..?so who goes first...?Good afternoon we are heard in the whole of palawan...

Topz Perez (vocalist): Good afternoon...to the whole of Cuyo, Agutaya, Magsaysay and to the whole of Palawan…Good afternoon…

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): What's your name, sir?

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): Dela Torre?How are you related to sir dela torre? to Dr jess dela torre?

Popoy dela torre: He's a relative of mine from Magsaysay

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): Philip Abid? These guys are really from Cuyo. Am I missing anyone?Is there anyone else?

Tops: The other member of the band is not here, he’s in manila...Franz Abid, Philip's brother

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So the name of your band is Bulyaw Mariguen? Why did you pick that name for your band?

Tops: Bulyaw Mariguen used to be a game in Cuyo which is now being forgotten, actually already forgotten by young Cuyonons, so we want to remind them that such a game existed...the game is like hide and seek…

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): I see…so you guys stayed here for a week already?

Tops: Yes, thank god...

Tops: No since we didn’t have much time.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): Were you guys able to pass by Cuyo during your one week stay in Puerto?

Tops: No since we didn’t have much time.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So what have you guys done so far in your one week stay in Puerto?

Tops: Actually, our purpose here is to shoot our music video..but every free time that we get, we play at different bars...we played at legend’s salo bar, asturias, scenario, then guest at different radio stations…

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): In Cuyonon huh?

Philip: Yes, we also played at Mendoza Park (last thursday).

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So guys, how were you able to form your band?
Tops: We formed the band by accident. I was still in abroad when I was able to write the song (PLONING ADIN KA REN) and so I tried to contact Popoy who is a friend of mine. Popoy knows Franz Abid. Then during the time that we were about to record Ploning adin ka ren, Philip was sleeping and was awakened by Franz telling him Philip, wake up, we need a drummer, come with us. Philip agreed to play the drums then we went straight to recording. That's the first time that we all met each other.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): When was that?

Tops: That was in November 2007...

Popoy: So before December, we were already able to record 4 original songs that is in Cuyonon; Bisara y lola, Midyo kano lamang, Sa marayeng lugar and Ploning

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): This Ploning is the PLONING ADIN KA REN?

Popoy: Yes and Ploning was born before the film Ploning was shot because we also worked at the production of Ploning. So before we shot Ploning we were already able to record Ploning adin ka ren.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So are the first 4 songs that you recorded released or for sale already?

Tops: Not yet. Actually, we really didn't plan to make an album. We initially recorded our songs for our friends. It just so happen that DJ Jojo went to Cuyo and got a copy of our cd then brought the cd to Puerto Princesa and played the cd at ifm. The feedback was good so we recorded two more which we self-produced. But eventually we ran out of budget. DJ Jojo then decided to help us complete the album.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So do you guys have gigs in Manila?

Tops: No. We're more of a studio band. We meet at the studio to record. We don't have any gigs in Manila yet

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So this project of DJ Jojo, DJ Jojo of IFM, she is a music video of your songs?

Tops: Yes, just one song… the music video of ploning adin ka ren…

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): But are you guys planning to go back here for Baragatan (fiesta)?

Tops: Hopefully, but the problem is the schedule...

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): You guys have individual jobs in manila?

Tops: Yes, Philip is a student, us we work at productions and Philip’s brother works in a call center.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): So it's like you guys just met up, decided to form a band and record an album for compilation purposes only and now it's being heard on the radio?

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): But do you guys plan to perform in Cuyo during the fiesta?

Tops: Maybe by fiesta but we don’t have plans yet…Although, last fiesta we were able to perform 2 of our original songs at the Battle of the bands where all the songs are in Cuyonon.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): Ok. So why rock? why not mellow music?

Tops: For me, it’s to show people that songs in cuyonon can also ride with the times and not just be limited to folk music or some imitated songs with Cuyonon translations. In our songs, we really think of the melody and the lyrics.

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): If I’m not mistaken, there is a kagawad in Magsasaysay who translates the lyrics of love songs to cuyonon? (I have a cd of that at home.)

Popoy: Yes, Kagawad Andaw. He’s songs are nice too…

Rouel Caralipio (AM announcer): ok...Can we listen to a sample of your song?

Bulyaw Mariguen Wows The Audience at Mendoza Park

Bulyaw Mariguen Gets Featured at Different Radio Stations in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan

In between hectic music video production schedules (as Bulyaw Mariguen are also actors for the music video and part of the art department), Bulyaw Mariguen runs to different radio stations in Palawan to be featured and interviewed by different radio personalities, proof that there is a demand for contemporary songs in Cuyonon in the province of Palawan, Philippines. Video footages of the radio guestings will be available soon. Here are some pictures and brief information about the radio guestings for the meantime.

Interview and feature of Bulyaw Mariguen at the DYPR Breaktime AM program of DJ Regie and Ruth Rodriguez last April 22, 2009. DYPR- AM 765 KHZ is the province’s Official No. 1 AM Station in the latest KBP-RRC Survey.

Bulyaw Guests at the BASKOG FM program of DJ GURU (IFM 99.9), where their songs were first heard.

The Concept Behind the Guegma Music Video

The Guegma Music Video was not originally planned to be produced this June 2009. But having a few more extra hours and inexhaustible creative minds, Kamaru productions decided to make a very simple but meaningful music video of Bulyaw Mariguen's Guegma or Love in English.

The concept of the music video is very simple. The video shows frames of I LOVE YOU written in different languages with a few scenes of Topz Perez and Popoy dela Torre of Bulyaw Mariguen singing. What sets this video apart from all the other music videos that you see is that the languages in this video are Philippine and World languages. From Agutaynen, Cuyonon and Cagayanen (languages in Palawan), to major Philippine languages (Kapampangan, Tagalog, Ilokano, Bisaya, Cebuano, Waray, etc) to foreign languages (Korean, Niponggo, Spanish, etc) to braille, this music video is well-researched and very economical considering that the expenses for this are very minimal.

THE PLONING ADIN KA REN MUSIC VIDEO: SECRETS REVEALED

Making a music video is already hard in itself, but doing it with a limited budget and with almost all of the scenes on the Balsahan river made the production of THE PLONING ADIN KA REN MUSIC VIDEO even harder (but of course, more worthwhile). During the PLONING ADIN KA REN music video shoot, resourcefulness and creativity became the most important ingredients in making a sumptuous PLONING ADIN KA REN Music Video.

TRACK, CRANE & DOLLY

Despite the improvements in film-making technology, Palawan still doesn't have a dolly, a crane and a track for the camera. Thus, instead of using what you see in the picture below

the production team of the music video used a dining table and a cart for kids as the dolly, track and crane for the music video. See photos below.

Below is a sample of a shot achieved by such improvised tools.

The production team also took advantage of the presence of water in the shoot. So this rubber boat was used to serve as a track and dolly for the close-up shots.

While the rubber boat was being pushed back and forth, the wooden crafts were being rotated by the art department. Below are the screencaps of the shots achieved by doing the aforementioned tricks.

SMOKE MACHINE

Due to a very limited budget, the producer didn't rent a smoke machine anymore. They made use of an improvised smoke machine instead.

SECURITY

To ensure the safety of everyone, the wooden crafts were tested several times if they could float for a long time with people on top of them. The drums which were rented also had to be tied to the wooden craft to ensure that it remains free from water and the wooden crafts in some scenes had to be tied down to the rocks at the bottom of the river.

ELECTRICITY

There was also no electricity in Balsahan so a generator had to be borrowed and the operator of which had to be hired.

The Concept Behind the Ploning Adin Ka Ren Music Video

“Ploning Adin Ka Ren” is a song of searching and longing, thus, the story in the Ploning Adin Ka Ren Music Video rests on a guy (JR Payuyo) searching for his long lost lover PLONING. The twist in the music video comes from the elements mixed in the story.

The music video starts with JR waking up and realizing that the love of his life is gone (Ploning). JR then searches for Ploning (played by Febbie Sabbalucca) and encounters different sets of people with different backgrounds, all giving him diverse reactions. JR first encountered a teacher and her students, then two little kids, then who we call the religious figures group (composed of a nun, a Tagbanua priestess, and a muslim woman), then two musicians (one folk, one pop), then the alakayo, then two guys playing chess, then the corporate group, then finally a child with a doll pointing him to the right direction where he can find Ploning.

Most of the characters in the story are chosen due to their symbolic value to the experiences of the band in promoting their music and their symbolic value to Palawan's culture. Cuyono rock music is something new to the young students of Palawan, to the musicians (both folk and pop) in Palawan, to normal people playing chess or doing just about anything. The band's music is experimental and this initiative to promote such music is the first in Palawan.

The Alakayo is already a trademark of the Cuyono culture and the Tagbanuas (performing at the second chorus of the music video) who are one of the oldest indigenous groups in the Philippines are mostly found in Palawan. Palawan is also very diverse in its cultural composition, thus, we acknowledged the presence of Muslims, Christians, Tagbanuas in the music video. The private sector represented by the corporate people, religious figures and students are also basic components of contemporary Philippine and Palawan society.

A major twist in the music video is the use of a river as the location for the shoot. The music video was really conceptualized to be shot on a body of water primarily because of the close ties of the Cuyonons with water. Also apparent from the music video are the submerged guitar wires representing music that is powered by the river.

A final twist is added to the music video when the Ploning that JR finds turns out to be different from the Ploning he knows. Ploning has changed from being a woman of tradition to being a woman influenced by modernity which represents a lot of young Cuyonons nowadays.

The blank expression on the face of JR on the last few frames of the music video intends to give the audience the freedom to guess what is going on in the mind of JR. Was he disappointed with the Ploning he saw? It depends.

The video is shot at Balsahan, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan managed by the Iwahig Prison and Penal Colony and produced by Matinlo and Kamaru productions.

Last April 18-23, 2009, the auditions for the lead roles of the PLONING ADIN KA REN MUSIC VIDEO of Bulyaw Mariguen were held at the SECOND FLOOR, DANCE STUDIO OF DYPR. Out of the many great Palawan talents who auditioned, Matinlo productions and Kamaru productions chose Febbie Sabbaluca and JR Payuyo to play PLONING and her lover.

John Ray "JR" Payuyo is an 18 year old Electronics and Communications Engineering Student at Adamson University. He was born in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and he finished elementary and high school education at the Palawan State University where he was also a varsity basketball player. Challenging himself to do things that are beyond his usual activities became this campus heart throb's main motivation in wanting to play the role of Ploning's lover in the music video. Despite not having any background on acting or modelling and constantly declaring that he's the shy type, JR Payuyo proved to be a good talent to work with both in the shoot of the music video and in his photo shoot with Kamaru productions. JR Payuyo's native tongue is Tagalog but he is exposed to people who speak Cuyonon since he is based in Puerto Princesa City. According to him, being with the band who are Cuyonons and working with the Kamaru team who are Kapampangans didn't make him feel uneasy. As a matter of fact, he had a lot of fun while working with everyone. If asked to speak a few Cuyonon phrases, JR would say "ang mga diablong dan!" or "those devils" in English.

Febbie Ann "Febbie" Sabbaluca is an 18 year old Tourism student of Palawan State University. She was born in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and is a model of the Palawan Talent Center. She won the second runner up title in the Miss Roxas 2009 pageant and the second runner up title in the Mutya ng Palawan 2007 pageant. She was also among the TOP 30 finalists in the nationwide search for housemates for the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Season 2 which she decided to drop when she was already in Manila upon realizing that she preferred a simple life. Febbie auditioned for the Ploning role out of curiosity and the need for new experiences. Although Febbie is a native Tagalog speaker who doesn't understand Cuyonon, she says that she is proud of the music video and that Palawenos should check it out.

CASTING THE TALENTS FOR THE PLONING ADIN KA REN MUSIC VIDEO

Next step to the auditions and to choosing the lead actors for the PLONING ADIN KA REN Music Video is finding the other talents needed for the music video and looking for their costumes. One of the hardest talents to find is the Tagbanua group of people. First of all, matinlo productions had to ensure that they are not violating any rules pertaining to indigenous groups so they had to go to the National Commission for Indigenous People in Barangay Sta. Monica, Puerto Princesa City to confirm. After confirming that it's ok to include the Tagbanuas in the music video, matinlo productions had to travel to Napsan, which is a 2 hour rough road drive from the city proper with some rivers to cross, to ask permission to Kuya Rudy and company (the Tagbanua group) to take some videos of their dances. Now each Tagbanua group has their own rules and so matinlo productions also had to make sure that they do not violate the Tagbanua rules and that they pay the dues due to the Tagbanua group. Accomodations for the Tagbanuas had to be arranged as well and a driver dedicated to them. The Tagbanua group is one of the oldest groups in the Philippines who have maintained their own system of writing also called Apurahuano. They have their own language, own practices, own dances and songs and own beliefs which are no longer being passed down by the older generation of Tagbanuas to the younger generation of Tagbanuas. Kuya Rudy belongs to those few people who were taught of Tagbanua dances and rituals by his parents.

Next we also had to find the people who will be the 3 religious figures needed for the music video. Special thanks to Mares Krishnaa Bajar for the Muslim woman costume, to the Palawan Museum for the Tagbanua babaylan costume and to Sister Emilia of St. Ezekiel Moreno Parish for the gala.

The anyel (blue dye) was also hard to find since not everyone knows the dye as blue dye or anyel. Luckily, we found some at NCCC. After announcing at different radio stations and online sites of the auditions for the lead roles for the PLONING ADIN KA REN Music Video, last April 18-23, 2009, the auditions for the lead actors of the PLONING ADIN KA REN MUSIC VIDEO were held at the Second Floor, Dance Studio of DYPR. Christopher "Topz" Perez (vocals) works as part of the art department of different productions in Manila. He was part of the production team of the Cuyono film, Ploning. During his free time, he writes songs in Cuyonon and also designs shirts with witty Cuyonon lines (always sold out!!!). Topz's musical influence is mostly alternative rock. AND YES, he's single.

Philip Abid (the drummer) is a second year nursing student who also plays lead guitars alongside Franz with the heavy metalband LAST FALL PILIPINAS. Philip is the natural charmer of the band. He can play the piano, guitars and drums with ease and can make you laugh out loud with his quirks.

Rico Padrones is a 2nd year college student who's natural wit and talent in dancing amazed so many people in Palawan (aside from his brilliance in playing the drums). If you want to see a guy bored with double peds, you should see this guy perform.

Jeorlie Magbanua also played the drums for some of the songs of Bulyaw Mariguen and was the sound engineer of the band during their Puerto Princesa City tour.

BULYAW MARIGUEN- HOW IT WAS FORMED

It was in the year 2007 when Popoy dela Torre, Franz Abid, Philip Abid and Topz Perez (all Cuyonons) decided to make four (4) original rock songs using the Cuyonon language. Popoy dela Torre (bassist of Bulyaw Mariguen) and Franz Abid (lead guitarist of Bulyaw Mariguen) at that time belonged to a different band (Kannayus) when Topz Perez (who just came back from Israel) wrote PLONING ADIN KA REN and asked Popoy dela Torre if he wanted to add music to the melody and CUYONON lyrics that he was already able to create. Popoy dela Torre then suggested that they get Franz Abid as their lead guitarist (since Franz's musical influence is more contemporary) and with the 3 of them combined they only needed a good drummer.

Philip, brother of Franz Abid (who can sing and play the guitar, piano and drums) was sleeping near Franz Abid at the time that Popoy, Topz and Franz decided to form a band and so he was awakened by Franz and asked if he wanted to be the drummer of the band. Using his savings in Israel, Topz, Popoy, Franz and Philip recorded their first 4 Cuyono rock and acoustic songs namely PLONING ADIN KA REN (OH PLONING, WHERE ARE YOU?); BISARA Y LOLA; MIDYO KANO LAMANG; SA MARAYENG LUGAR. And that simple move became the band's FIRST BIG STEP in HAVING AN ALBUM PRODUCED AND RELEASED in Palawan.

BULYAW MARIGUEN- REASON FOR MAKING MUSIC IN CUYONON

Initially, Bulyaw Mariguen created their songs only as a means to have fun and to produce songs in their own language for their friends and families. [Cuyonons live far away from their families (due to lack of jobs in the island of Cuyo, Palawan)].

But what started out as EXPLICIT FUN became a more serious endeavor when Joey Fabello of Matinlo Productions got a copy of their cd through her cousin, Dale Abid, when she went to Cuyo, Palawan last January 2008.

BULYAW MARIGUEN AND MATINLO PRODUCTIONS

Joey Fabello at that time was planning to apply as a radio jockey in IFM 99.9 Palawan and when she got a copy of the band's cd and got the job as one of IFM 99.9's radio jockey, she asked IFM 99.9'S PROGRAM DIRECTOR (DJ REGIE) if it was possible to broadcast the songs of Bulyaw Mariguen. DJ Regie, seeing that the band's songs are of broadcast quality and being surprised that such a genre of Cuyonon music existed, agreed to broadcast the first 4 songs of Bulyaw Mariguen at IFM 99.9.

After having the broadcasting of Bulyaw Mariguen's songs approved, Joey Fabello, tried to contact the members of Bulyaw Mariguen individually to ask for their approval of the broadcasting of their songs and to ask if they wanted to do a project with her. At that time, Topz Perez and Popoy dela Torre were busy shooting the Cuyono film PLONING, thus, Topz and Popoy (the older members of the band) weren't able to communicate with Joey Fabello.

After a few months of working as a radio jockey, Joey Fabello went to Italy to study a master's degree called cultural projects for development where she finalized a project proposal called CUYONON CONTEMPORARY MUSIC: Music as a means to address cultural loss. During that time, Bulyaw Mariguen also decided to record 2 new songs (Amos Tangay Tangway and Guegma-Rock Version) which they thought would be a good addition to their songs in IFM so they tried to contact Joey Fabello. But being in Italy she instead facilitated for the band's 2 new songs to be broadcasted through IFM through the help of DJ GURU and DJ REGIE of IFM.

During that time (November of 2008) as well, Jason Laxamana of Kamaru Productions, a close friend of Joey Fabello and a fellow advocate of the promotion and development of Philippine regional languages, was already directing different music videos of Kapampangan songs. During one of their online conversations, Joey Fabello asked Jason Laxamana if he wanted to direct a music video for Bulyaw Mariguen and Jason agreed to do the job.

January of 2009, Joey Fabello came back to Palawan and asked Bulyaw Mariguen if they wanted to have a music video produced by her and by Jason Laxamana of Kamaru Productions, a proposal which Popoy dela Torre of Bulyaw Mariguen, accepted.

BULYAW MARIGUEN- ALBUM PRODUCTION

Initially, Joey Fabello only wanted to produce a music video for the band. But seeing that such a project doesn't provide tangible support to the band, she endeavored to produce the album of the band (composed of 13 songs in Cuyonon), to fully promote the band by facilitating radio, tv and event guestings of the band, by setting up online accounts of the band and by producing radio commercials for the band, and to produce the band's first music video.

Last June 5, 2009, Joey Fabello registered her production company with the Department of Trade and Industry under the name matinlo productions and with Bulyaw Mariguen (the album project) as her first project.

PURPOSE

Bulyaw Mariguen’s Songs are rock and acoustic songs in the Cuyonon language having contemporary society as the setting of each story within the songs. The stories in their songs represent a reality seen through the eyes of urban Cuyonons who are exposed to both traditional Cuyonon practices and rituals and to the effects of a globalized world. Their songs are also the first Cuyonon rock songs broadcasted, promoted and made available in Palawan through one album, thereby making Bulyaw Mariguen innovators of Cuyonon music.

Bulyaw Mariguen’s songs are the first of their kind. Promoting them to the Filipino community thus shows the Filipino community of the existence of the Cuyonons and their drive to be heard in a country monopolized by creative outputs in Tagalog.

As a means to have Bulyaw Mariguen's Cuyonon rock and acoustic songs heard by and promoted to a greater number of other Filipino cultural groups (through music video channels broadcasted nationwide), Cuyonons (since a lot of Cuyonons has migrated to different parts of the country already) and Palawenos (since most Palawenos patronize national television), a music video of one of Bulyaw Mariguen's Songs, PLONING ADIN KA REN, will be shot in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan this coming May 2009.

PARTNERSHIPS

Through the help of the Palawan Broadcasting Corporation (DYPR TV PATROL, DYPR PALAWAN RADYO and IFM 99.9), Kalalangan Kamaru, the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, cuyopress.com and different individuals (the list of which is ever-increasing as we come closer to the shooting dates of the music video), matinlo productions is able to produce this music video (Ploning Adin Ka Ren).

CASTING CALLS/AUDITIONS

Auditions for the lead actor and the lead actress of the music video have already started last April 18 and 19, 2009 at the DYPR Dance Studio (Mabini cor Valencia Street, Puerto Princesa City). Second Batch of auditions starts tomorrow (April 20, 2009) 1 to 3 pm at DYPR.

Should you be interested to contribute your skills for the said project, we are also looking for other individuals to form part of the cast of the music video. Please check the characters needed in the succeeding paragraphs.

THE CONCEPT
The Ploning Adin Ka Ren Music Video is not the usual music video that you see in music television channels. For one, the music video will have English or Tagalog (depending on the market) subtitles to make the songs understandable to the viewers of the music video. At the same time, the concept behind the music video is highly symbolic of what is happening to the Cuyonon culture and the struggle of the music of Bulyaw Mariguen to be accepted by the public who seem to condemn than support such innovations in music. (The Concept will be further explained in a succeeding blog).

NOTES:
It must be noted that the cast needed for the music video took gender issues into consideration. See Religious figure and the attempt to represent girls and boys in most groups. It must also be noted that the indigenous groups chosen to be part of the INDIGENOUS PEOPLE cast are those who can be found in Palawan.

THE PRODUCTION TEAM
The production team behind the music video is composed of people from different production teams such as matinlo productions and KALALANGAN KAMARU and different individuals who are interested to contribute their skills for the production of the music video.

Matinlo productions is owned by Joey Fabello and in this production absorbed the responsibilities of a Producer and a Production Manager. The director and the assistant director of the music video came from Kalalangan Kamaru.

The director of this music video is a multi-awarded Kapampangan director and cultural advocate. He bagged the First Philippine Digital Award in short film category from the Entertainment Channel (ETC) this year, is the director of the First Ever Kapampangan Telenovela in the Philippines (Kalam) and the director of the music video of Mernuts entitled Oras, seen at MTV Pilipinas. He was also the one who spearheaded the Rockapampangan Project together with Holy Angel University.
